Raging Bull is not the average boxing movie we are used to seeing. It is much more intense and vivid. The movie goes in depth with the idea of boxing, love, power, sex and drugs as the main focus. It was viewed as another amazing film directed by Martin Scorsese. The film not only is ranked as one of the greatest films of the 80’s but one the greatest films of all time.
Raging Bull has its ups and downs, its many flaws and downfalls. For example the acting, the acting was nothing exceptional, nothing that makes you scream “Oh My God.” Robert De Niro played the lead role of Jake LaMotta a young middleweight boxing champion who suffers with the use of drugs, uncontrollable jealousy and the loss of his family. De Niro trained and worked hard to get the role, he gained 60 pounds, which back in time was a high record to get a role in a movie. There was no facial expression, no emotional attachment throughout the movie which was two hours and seven minutes long, keeping the same expression and emotion throughout the whole film. Raw, is the best word to describe the acting, it seemed to be as though the director a different intention.
The other actors/characters aren’t as valid as LaMotta, he takes it away because the camera is always on him, centered on him.The film is supposed be a story about a powerful fighter who overcame obstacles but instead you get a dragged out a movie with a storyline that wasn’t thought out well. The storyline could have been better, if you are going to make a movie about a person you should base it off what the story is so it could have potential. The timeline behind the movie should have been done differently and in a better manner, although it was intense and had its moments where it made you stand up and want to see what happened next it wasn’t all that amazing.
The two most outstanding aspects of this film are the camera work and the sound. The camera work in Raging Bull was in fact amazing when watching it at times you could feel like you were a part of it, as if you were in the movie. As LaMotta entered the matches and the stage you could feel the excitement and the crowd getting hype making you feel the same way because the image that was being showed was that extraordinary. You can tell there was time put in to the camera work as well as the sound. The extra sounds that were in the movie also made a difference, it side tracked you from the poor acting. The “dashes” and “swishes” of the fists going back and forth, the crowd, the feeling and emotion of his wife when she is talking to him all makes a difference. It brings a sense of settledness when you feel like you are close to the characters. Raging Bull is a movie that will either change you or change your view on the film world.
