Se7en
Almost 20 years past, pretty old for movies, and this movie gets another fresh look from a new generation. Somethings you had to be there to see, some movies lose its luster as time goes on, and some can live on forever. This is one of those movies. The way it was made no matter how old you are this movie can be applied to real life and be scary when doing it. Real life application in a movie has to be done right as well. From each scene, to the music, and the way the story is told keeps you on the edge of your seat. These aspects of Se7en keep it going on from 1995 to 2014.
The setting of this story looks like the worse part of any big city. So anywhere you come from you can relate to a very poor city setting. It is always dark with low lights. Enough for you to see everything but still giving a grey feeling. Now if you already didn’t want to be in this city the last thing is its always raining. All these things together can be seen as a bit much but all people can relate to this type of area. It is clear that in this place nothing good is to come. Also it makes sense why the setting would be like this. A master plan like this one isn’t going to work where there is high security going through each building and a place where everything can be noticed.
The movie Se7en is about two detectives that go after a guy who kills based on the seven deadly sins. Using the seven deadly sins in movies is nothing new. What is new in this movie is you can see someone dying as shown in the movie. Each death shows you right away what sin it is and what happened. Later in the movie as the viewer you realize what it really took to kill these people. Pride is first shown with a woman's face with bloody bandages. As the scene goes on you see her holding sleeping pills and a phone(each glued to either hand with thumbs free). The realization, helped along by the movie, is that she could have called someone for help but instead she overdosed on sleeping pills. Knowing that she rather kill herself than be disfigured and there being people like that in real life is as bad as thinking of the actual murder.
The whole movie is done very well but an interesting thing is that the story pulls the viewer in little by little. Only certain movies can do this successfully. Have the movie too boring in the beginning people lose interest but have the beginning too action packed the end doesn't deliver. The interest level of the viewer mimics the interest level of the characters. Like a actual case the detectives find the first body and people think its a normal murder. As more bodies are found the interest level of the detectives rises and each kill is examined more and more. Other people get called in and add to the level of severity to this chain of murders.
When all the pieces are given to you as a viewer you start to see the intensity of the killer. Some of these murders are years old. The killer planned the murders to be founded in a certain way down the the date the murder was committed and the date the body was found. Each and every thing had to be perfect to have the killer’s message known. A very unsettling moment is when the killer turns himself in. Him doing this was all a part of the plan. At the end of the movie you find out that three of the biggest parts of the killers plan are given to you from the beginning. That means the killer has been looking closely at the other characters for much longer than when the movie starts. For most people that type of intensity can only be imagined.
The movie Se7en gets so deep that reading this will not ruin the movie at all. The ending has been known to a lot of people and used in other media yet Se7en still continues to surprise its viewers. Young, old, new to the genre, or well into these type of movies there is something to take for all. Se7en will last through all generations to see.
