Seven Pounds critique
by: Tyanna Pleasant & Markietra Keese
Seven Pounds directed by Gabriele Muccinois, is an inspirational tear jerker love story. Will Smith plays the hero, that is not perfect, but the good he does evens out his imperfections. There are lots of themes in this movie that people could relate to, such as love, the gift of giving, and deceit. Tim Thomas (Will Smith) had his heart set on a dream, like most people do. His dream is to make life changes for 7 people; no matter the cost, even if it’s his life. He gives to people who he says “... are having a really hard time, who need help but is too proud to ask for a handout”. His sacrifices would change the lives of these seven unsuspected people forever. Each character has such a distinctive personality, it makes such an unforgettable impact on the movie. When you help others in need, you will live a more satisfying death.
How Tim picks the people he chooses to save is a complicated process. He pretends to work for the IRS, but is really using his brother’s (Michael Ealy) identity. Some of the people he finds owes the government money, and uses it as an excuse to get to know them more personally. That is the first step that will either make or break the relationship he builds with each character. Based on his opinion of whether the person is “good” or not, will determine if they are unfortunate enough to receive his help. While on his journey, we are introduced to one of the people Tim is interested in. His name is Ezra Turner (Woody Harrelson), a blind man with a wonderful personality. The first shot of Ezra makes your heart want to melt. He is a single man trying to get by, always with a smile on his face. What makes this character so unique is knowing that he has every right to be upset and mad at everyone, (you would be too if you couldn’t see. Ever.), and chooses not to be. Ultimately, the best gift to give a man that grew up blinded by the world, is the gift of sight.
Another person that was able to receive life changing help was a woman named Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), who has a very weak heart. She has little time to live unless she finds someone with a heart her body will not reject. What keeps the audience so interested in this character is that her and Tim fall in love with each other. This is a big twist in the movie that many people may not catch the first time they see it. Knowing that Tim’s past relationship ended with death, it is ironic that he falls in love with another female whom he knows could soon pass. When they are alone after spending a day with each other, the scene is gloomy, making the audience feel like they just lost a best friend. The camera work plays a big part in setting the scene, and the emotion given off from the characters. Rosario Dawson, was also a marvelous actress. She allowed the audience to feel as she was feeling. She made the audience feel like they also needed Tim in their lives just as much as she did.
By the end of the movie, you feel as if a big dysfunctional family came together for a reunion, and it was the best day anyone could have. One man brought together 7 people with completely different stories, and changed their lives in a way that no one ever could. It is a heartbreaking movie that has much significance, and a bigger message when you sit and analyze it. Tim Thomas was made into a legend and his legacy will always be remembered. A piece of him will always be with those 7 characters.
